Flu Shot Alternative

It’s that time of the year when doctors and the news channels are all pushing flu shots. They say this is going to be the worst year ever. Everyone should get a flu shot.

I have never gotten a flu shot, no one in my household has ever gotten a flu shot and I don’t remember anyone ever getting the flu. I personally have had the flu two times that I can remember. Once in my late teens and again in my adulthood but I don’t remember when, it’s been a while.

My cold/allergy/flu preventative is my  Super Healthy Tea. Along with some basic healthy living, we are able to build our immune system to stand up against colds, allergies and even the flu. As soon as I start hearing adds for flu shots, I start adding more of this:

Drink plenty of fluids. Water, warm tea, chicken soup and OJ with a little ACV.

Get plenty of rest. 7-8 hours a night is suggested for adults.

A healthy diet. Eating a good variety of mostly raw and real foods with limited processed foods, sugars and very limited fast food if at all.

Exercise. It can be a daily walk, bike ride, tennis…whatever gets us moving and gets our heart rate up a little.

Here are some other natural immune booster remedies I’ve come across:

Essential Oils

God is good! He provides…everything!

I’ve been looking up information about essential oils since I started using them almost a year ago. Do they really work? What does each one do? Which company is better? Does it really matter where they’re grown? I try to include the benefits of whatever I’m using in each post, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten.

Here is a great series that was mentioned on Facebook this morning about just this topic.

I hope it helps you make informed decisions.

Cavities From Raw Foods

Over the past couple of years I’ve been busy replacing our basic chemical-laden foods, household items and personal care items with natural, homemade chemical free versions. I’ve said before that we are probably on the healthier half of the way most Americans eat. So, I was very, very, very surprised when I saw cavities in my little ones teeth! Within seconds I started an intense search for what causes cavities. In the mean time, he was on a NO SUGAR AT ALL diet and I put MORE  toothpaste on his toothbrush.CWCavities

The bad news is, as I was also surprised to find out, that almost everything he eats causes cavities. His favorite foods, well he likes all foods, but his staples. Oatmeal, granola, nuts, seeds, breads, chips, juice and fruits are all high in Phytic Acid. From what I understand, Phytic Acid absorbs the minerals needed for strong bones and teeth- calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron.

So what do we do now? Become vegetarian? Oh wait! The list didn’t include meat or…any animal products for that matter. Hmm. I remember coming across a lot of blogs and websites talking about fat being good and soaking their food, but I never read enough to know what it was really about. I wasn’t ready to jump on the hippie bandwagon yet. You know the ones who drink grass and eat fermented foods that I used to throw out. lol. Yes, I eat cheese and yogurt, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about soaking foods and fermenting kombucha.

The good news is our awesome God created a body that can heal itself. And He gave  us the wisdom to figure it out. While revisiting soaking foods, I came across remineralizing toothpastes. You can heal your teeth!

Stay tuned for more about soaking foods and our toothpaste production!

Did I tell you I even tried Oil Pulling?

Change of Season – Fall

Fall officially starts September 22nd…in the Northern Hemisphere…this year. Did you know it changes slightly every year? There is a simple scientific explanation that involves the rotation of the Earth and it’s distance and location to the Sun. You can learn more about this on the Old Farmer’s Almanac dstclockimagewebsite.  Basically that means less daylight hours and we move our clocks back to try to get as much daylight as we can.

How do you feel about Daylight Savings Time?

This also means our chickens will stop laying!

Do you support artificial sunlight in chicken coops to encourage laying?

July and August are the hottest months of the year in Florida, so we’re not really feeling very Fall-ish three weeks into September. Sometimes in mid October we start having a few overcast days (without rain), maybe a gentle breeze and if we’re lucky a cold front will come through and it might drop into the high 70’s/low 80’s. We usually have a brief Fall in January before our two weeks of Winter in February. You can check out our current weather here.

Our Fall is what we make it, so out comes our “Fall” bin. I try to remember sometime before October to pull it out and start talking, teaching and decorating for Fall and the Holidays it contains. We don’t celebrate halloween, so we focus on the changing of the season and Daylight Savings Time before we jump into Thanksgiving and then Christmas. I have a bin for each season that contains a variety of Seasonal items that might include decorations, dishtowels and previous crafts among other items. This is my Fall bin.

We’ll be sharing some Fall crafts soon.
